TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Taiwan Fund for Children and Families will commend an octogenarian in a ceremony to be held in Taoyuan, northern Taiwan on Sunday for his long-term financial support of impoverished children in Sri Lanka.

Fund officials said Tuesday that Weng Hsin-mao, 83, who lives in Taichung, central Taiwan, has sponsored two Sri Lankan children for 20 years, paying around NT$10,000 (US$330) annually for their living expenses.
Weng began sending money to the children after he became deeply touched in 1988 upon learning that the South Asian country donated corneas to Taiwan to help more than 1,000 people regain their eyesight.
Weng wanted to do something in return and asked the fund to arrange for him to join its sponsorship program, the officials said.
They said that in addition to two Sri Lankan children, Weng has also sponsored three impoverished children living in India and Vietnam.
"As long as I'm alive, I will not stop the sponsoring, "Weng said, adding that good deeds help others and make him happy.
