Cathay Charity Group (CCG) and the Taiwan Fund for Children and Families (CCF) yesterday jointly held an event on Western table manners at The Howard Plaza Hotel in Taipei, for aboriginal children who are part of Kaohsiung's and Pingtung's CCF.
This was the 5th year that CCG has held the activity "Come and Learn! 2007 Cathay Children Growth Camp (CCGC)," a four-day series to give these children a new experience.
"We focused on technology education before, but this year we are focusing on the humanities and social education," said Fredrick F. Chien, chairman of Cathay Charity Foundation.
"We teach Western table manners every year, in a time of globalization, and we hope they can learn from this experience then pass it on to children in their communities," Chien said.
The children attached their wish cards to a big tree before having lunch, so that the tree's power may make their dreams come true. The manager of the hotel taught them how to use knives and forks correctly during an etiquette course on Western dining. Each group has a leader, who grew up as a part of the CCF, and come here to help these children in a positive way.
Unfortunately, there were 16 children who couldn't attend the event, because Typhoon Sepat had obstructed the roads. The children who were able to attend may be able to tell them about their many experiences when they get home: they took the MRT, visited Taipei 101, Eslite bookstore and the Taipei Astronomical Museum.
CCGC has always devoted itself to improving the lives of marginalized children, giving them the experience of city life and broadening their perspective. They expressed hope that the experience of the camp can fill the children lives with sunshine and hope
