Taiwan Fund for Children and Families Launches Emergency Relief and Post-Disaster Rehabilitation for Sichuan Earthquake

The 7.8 magnitude earthquake occurred in Sichuan Province, China on May 12th has already taken at least 20,000 lives. The devastated scene is unbearable to witness. As a member of NPO, Taiwan Fund for Children and Families (TFCF) has formed an emergency support group with the aim to provide relief projects meeting the integration needs for the disaster areas and to bring warmth to the survivors.

” The predecessor of TFCF was China’s Children Fund established in Canton Province, China in 1938, which at that time set up the first orphanage locally.. TFCF are deeply concerned over the plight and shock of the people suffering from the strong earthquake in Sichuan, and will reach out to the victims and provide the affected children and their families with humanitarian assistance.“? Mr. Po-Rung Lin, Chairman of the Board of TFCF, says.

Taiwan has been hit severely by 921 Earthquake. At the time TFCF had drafted a five-year rehabilitation program with short, mid and long-term plans, put more than four hundred million NT dollars in emergency rescue and placement for children, and provided Long-term housing recovery, trauma counseling for children and youth, schooling assistance and life adaptation counseling after the disaster. TFCF had also donated 120 million NT dollars for the South Asia Tsunami relief in rehabilitation for the affected people in India and Sri Lanka in 2004. In the duration of a three-year plan, TFCF provided services in daily supplements such as food and clothes for children and youth, better nutrition, medical and health cares, housing reconstruction, schooling and study assistance for children and youth, psychological counseling and therapy, environmental sanitation, community care services, job and skill training for parents and? family livelihood support.

According to our experience in local and international relief work, we find it more challenging and time-consuming for the rehabilitation process after devastating events than the immediate emergency response. The rehabilitation work needs long-term support and concern from the public. In addition to the basic needs like house and school reconstruction, medical care, provisions of water and food, the affected also need psychosocial support from specialists in healing their pain from the lose of family and the trauma following the earthquake.

At the moment, people inquired TFCF about how to deliver their assistance in the rebuilding of Sichuan earthquake. TFCF actively endeavors to establish a platform with China. ?Once China permits charity units to enter the disaster area, TFCF will immediately launch the rescue operation. The rebuilding of Sichuan earthquake will need more resources. ?TFCF calls on Taiwan people to regard others as one's brothers and have others' sufferings at heart to care the situation continuously.
